fillmore
bummm bah! bumm bah!
this morning we got up to discover that the replay did not record fillmore. right now the replay is full of a lot of crap (mostly good eats/the adventures of pete & pete) and doesn't have that much room left. i've noticed that when it gets this full it doesn't like to record. i was pretty dissapointed to discover that it wasn't recorded. it was a new episode too. so we made breakfast and sulked (well i did anyway). i made eggs and randall made bacon. sidenote: fillmore is this fantastic "cop drama"-esque saturday morning kid's cartoon. but it really is fantastic. and it is worth setting your vcrs for.

the case of the marzipan cake
at around 3 we left the house and headed to los altos. grant was having a birthday party and we were invited. but it wasn't just any birthday party, he was having a murder mystery party. my character was named ruby robber and i was the heiress to a rubber chicken and gag joke legacy. i tried to step into character and thought i did a pretty good job of it. i think i've missed my calling. obviously i was born to ham it up.

everyone attending the party was asked to bring an appetizer of some sort. so on our way to the party we stopped to buy a platter of vegetables or cheeses or something, but we didn't really plan it so well and there wasn't anything pre-made available. so we bought our own stuff and put it together when we got there. even though there were only 8 people attending there was a ton of food. we all ate appetizers all night long. and then heidi tried to serve us a ham. but we were all too full so we had to pass. eventually it was time for the birthday cake. grant is crazy for marzipan, so it was a white cake with marzipan frosting. i'm not so sure what i think of marzipan. sometimes i think it's tasty and other times i wonder why i'm eating a cake covered in lard.

sidenote: i won. i won. i won. i was the only one who figured out whodunnit. ha-cha!

    pockypig-style choco-chunk cookies
like most people i made my first batch of chocolate chip cookies following the recipe on the back of the nestle bag. those were good, but not completely satisfactory, so i've been experimenting/perfecting this recipe for the last few years. this is pretty close to perfection. but there is always room for improvement. this is my secret recipe. so shhhhh!!! and also, i'd like some feedback, so if you try this recipe, tell me what you think. thanks!

before you start anything else, preheat the oven to 375F.

in a blender (i don't have a food processor) combine flour, baking soda, baking powder and salt. pulse/blend until ingredients are mixed well. set aside. measure brown sugar into a 2 cup measuring cup add 1/2 cup of white sugar. stir until sugars are mixed well and set aside. put butter into large bowl. if the butter is not soft already (ie: you didn't realize you wanted to make cookies and you only have two frozen sticks) make sure the bowl is microwave safe and place into microwave for 3 minutes on 20% or until butter is softened. try not to end up with butter soup. and make sure it's real butter. the taste difference is really obvious. and if you're worried about health reasons, stop. you're making cookies, not health food snax. with a wooden spoon start whipping butter into a creamy smooth consistency. slowly stir in the sugar (make sure to break apart any lumps). once mixed add in the vanilla and stir. then add 1 egg, stir. then the other. stir completely. now slowly add the flour mixture. mix well. once this mixture is together. add a splash of milk and stir again. batter should be runnier than normal cookie batter, but if batter is too runny (ie: cake batter consistency) add in more flour as needed. stir in the chocolate chunks (i prefer chunks, but chips also work well)

drop by large (at least 1 inch wide) spoonfuls onto cookie sheet.

place sheet into oven. bake for about 11 minutes (depends on oven). remove sheet and let sit for 2 minutes (this is important or they'll fall apart). transfer to wire racks to cool completely. makes about 3 dozen. maybe.

for variation, try adding ground espresso directly to batter. or a pinch of nutmeg or cinnamon.
