i can always count on dad
when i emerged from my room this morning,
i was greeted by a large helium mylar balloon.
there was also a big present, a cake, and some cards on the table.
my dad always gets us a balloon and some dopey decorations.
when i was a teenager, he used to get us "teen" magazine,
or "sixteen" or "seventeen" magazine, depending on the birthday.
he knew we didn't usually read them, but it was just his way of saying,
"hey, happy birthday."
i sat down next to my cards and wondered if i felt any older.
then i went downstairs for a bowl of cereal and a conversation with my mom.
she unintentionally made me feel pretty pathetic and unmotivated.
when she left i started to cry.

fancy-doo-doo
this one comes from cindy, it's another way to say "fancy schmancy",
just fancier than a place/thing really needs to be. often
used in a negative connotation (example 1), but sometimes (example 2) it is a good thing.
"Let's go to the other restaurant, this one is too fancy-doo-doo and
I don't feel welcome here."
"His cool new cd player is totally fancy-doo-doo. Did you see all the options it had?"

too heavy to fly
when bao got home we went out to the field down the street and flew kites.
i got a new one for my birthday and we wanted to try it out.
it's a pretty large fancy-doo-doo kite and it looks really neat.
too bad it was too heavy to fly.
afterwards we went home and i opened my gifts.
i got the u2 tour dvd, a talking simpsons car, and some candy.

tough decisions
my parents like to take us out for our birthdays,
and it had actually been quite a few years since i've had a birthday meal with them.
my mom asked where i wanted to go,
but i really don't know any restaurants around here.
so i just said, "i don't know, somewhere different."
my mom knows i like japanese food a lot,
so we went to umeko (her friend's japanese restaurant).
i know my mom doesn't like japanese food, and neither does my dad.
but i guess i'm the birthday girl, so as long as i'm happy, right?
while we there my mom got several phone calls.
i don't mind that she talks at the table, we're used to it by now,
but it's embarassing because she talks so loud the whole restaurant can hear her.

so many choices
the best part about dinner was the dessert.
they had a help-yourself dessert bar with so many choices.
i opted for the ice cream.
but it wasn't your standard ice cream.
it was all the weird flavors you can get at the asian stores.
my favorite is the red bean flavor.
although the burnt sesame is really good too.
i think i ate more ice cream than i really needed to.
afterwards i was going to go downtown to meet wes and co. at lipstick,
but i was just so full and so sleepy that i didn't feel like it.
ugh, does that mean i'm getting old?
